Luke 17:11–19 tells the story of 10 lepers calling to Jesus for healing, but only one returns to give thanks. Around Thanksgiving, this passage is often treated as a moralistic lesson: “You need to be more grateful.”But do we need the Bible to tell us that? It isn’t a groundbreaking idea. Scientific studies tell us a grateful person is a happier person. TED Talks and Oprah are full of this stuff. Is this really the primary message Luke gives us here?

I once heard an international church planter inform his team leader he was moving back to America to care for his aging parents. But the response of this usually levelheaded team leader surprised me: “What do you think Jesus meant when he told his followers to let the dead bury the dead?”I confess, I was a bit offended. Didn’t he understand we’re commanded to honor our father and mother? And yet I know Jesus calls us to forsake all to follow him.

Even though Amazon considers 2022’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debut a success—the company touts more than 100 million viewers worldwide and record-breaking Prime Video signups from the show’s launch—many Tolkien fans found the premiere season a mixed bag, if not a total disappointment. I share that feeling.

“We’re Christians too!” It’s a line you may have heard time and again when sharing the gospel with a Mormon friend. Reasoning with a Mormon about his faith can be incredibly difficult. How should you go about it? I’d discourage you from beginning by telling your friend, “Your Jesus isn’t the Jesus of the Bible.” As a former Mormon, I can tell you that hearing that line from Christian street evangelists hurt far more than it helped.

To be a girl today is to be the beneficiary of decades of conversation about the complexities of womanhood, its many forms, and expressions. Boys, though, have been left behind. No commensurate movement has emerged to help them navigate toward a full expression of their gender. It’s no longer enough to “be a man”—we no longer even know what that means. So Christian publishers keep releasing new books for men, but none seems to gain the popularity of past bestsellers.
