MASON CITY — Don “Bub” Anderson still recalls the last night he climbed — or had to be helped — out of a race car. At 85 years old, Anderson stood and looked at a replica of his old No. 33 race car Saturday at Southbridge Mall. The car was created to commemorate Anderson’s racing legacy. It’s been four decades since Anderson flipped his car — about as high as a telephone pole as some remember — and broke his back. It marked the end of his racing career.

MASON CITY — This NIACC baseball team doesn’t lack confidence. Still, it was one thing for the NIACC baseball team to rack up wins on its spring trip in Florida. It was another for the Trojans to earn a sweep of conference foe and 17th-ranked Iowa Central on Saturday afternoon at Roosevelt Field. Lucas Bakker lowered his already league-leading ERA with a 2-1 win in the opener before NIACC overcame a 5-0 deficit en route to a 13-8 victory in the nightcap.

The best thing about this group of boys is how supportive they are of each other and want everyone on the team to succeed. Weston Tackett set the tone early taking the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Running back David Brooks Jr. made moves scoring a touchdown on the Tigers first offensive drive.

Salem’s seventh grade won Thursday at Cabool 52-0. The high-scoring Tigers are averaging 45 points a game so far this season. Our edge blockers really did a great job of making the right blocks and opening up running lanes for our backs. Our interior line was moving the line of scrimmage too, which made the big difference in the game. The ground game was too strong for the Cabool Bulldogs. David Brooks Jr. scored three touchdowns, outrunning the defense all night for the Tigers.
