If we made a list of some of the most underrated writers/filmmakers currently working, somewhere near the top of that (fairly long) catalog would be Alex Garland. While he has had a few massive successes, most of his work is barely noticed by general audiences. And even though he has gotten wide critical acclaim for most of his working life, he hasn’t had the career he has earned. Let me break down his oeuvre for a second.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ is a cynical cash grab

As someone who pays their bills by watching and then writing about movies, I don’t really get to differentiate between movies that are “for me” or aimed at a completely different demographic. I have to watch it all. And I take that seriously. I go into every movie genuinely hoping for the best and don’t critique the film based on what I would have done, but whether the filmmaker achieved his or her intention.

How smart does a satire really need to be? This has been on my mind since the release of Bong Joon-ho’s fun but flawed Mickey 17 when I realized that if an explosive filled with ideas is dropped on America, maybe there’s no room for subtlety anymore, especially if it needs to land on as many people as possible. Long gone are the days when movies of fierce, raging anger and intelligence like Network and Dr. Strangelove connect with general audiences outside of critics and cinephiles.

Often there’s an overemphasis on her breasts and the other curves of her body, or she is miraculously free of wrinkles, and the imperfections that make her human.
