There’s something exciting about getting a last-minute invite on a fishing trip. The feeling of hasty packing, sorting through gear, and the element of the unknown. I guess I’m sort of a “Yes Man” when it comes to being invited somewhere I’ve never fished before. So when the email from Allie at Science on the Fly hit my inbox with the subject line “Fly Fishing in Brazil,” I felt a wave of butterflies. Not unlike the butterflies your 8th-grade crush gave you.

When asked to define the difference between a rainbow trout and a cutthroat trout, a biologist would tell you that although both species have different origins and ranges, they are both members of the same family and genus Salmonidae oncorhynchus. But they are also two distinct and different species. If you asked the same question of an avid fly fisherman, he would tell you that the two species are not only found in different areas, they each have very distinct appearances.

You wouldn’t use a Zebco on a tuna, just as you wouldn’t use a 4-weight on a tarpon. Any way you put it, there are optimal weight rods for each and every scenario. If you’re new to fly fishing or are diversifying into new species, there’s a learning curve. Going from a 5-weight trout rod to an 11-weight tarpon rod can be quite the change. While we can’t teach you how to cast a new rod, we can give you the tools to find that new rod.
