After years of flirting, the Utah Jazz finally made a commitment to tanking. Their reward? The fifth pick in a draft with four likely superstars. With a young roster that is talented but lacking a true potential tentpole leader (or, with apologies to Lauri Markkanen, one on their timeline) the Jazz simply must look to trade up into the top four this year. In Lauri, they have the perfect bait. Let’s rule out the first pick.

The preseason trade between the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves was fascinating, even in the moment. New York, after trading a haul of picks for Mikal Bridges, turned depth and ill-fitting "star" Julius Randle into perhaps the ideal second option in Karl-Anthony Towns; the Wolves turned their much-maligned star into depth and potential cap relief. One team going all in for a Finals berth, the other a conference finalist, perhaps taking a step back with the longer game in view.

This wasn’t supposed to work. Not this well, anyway. When the Minnesota Timberwolves traded former top pick Karl-Anthony Towns to New York for a package headlined by Julius Randle, the prevailing thought was that this was a long-term cap management move made with the newfangled aprons in mind. Randle’s fit with his new team was secondary and, when it was addressed, considered rather clunky.

Game 3 was encouraging for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics connected on 50 percent of their 40 three-point attempts in their 115-93 win over the New York Knicks, after shooting a combined 25-100 from deep in their two losses at home. While it is patently unwise to bet against the defending champs, chock full of prime talent, winning at Madison Square Garden in Game 4 and squaring the series, a loss makes it difficult to see how Boston progresses in this series.

The @utahjazz tanked for...the fifth pick? Wowsers! They need to trade into the top echelon of this @NBA draft in the worst way. For @yardbarker, I take a look at their best option. #NBADraft #NBA #NBAPlayoffs https://t.co/JnjmktgZFj
