ShareMONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Louisiana Chosen Sports Foundation began its Back to Grid Iron Games in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The Back to Grid Iron Games feature a live DJ, live football games, vendors, giveaways and games for community members. The games are six weeks and have two rounds of playoff games before the championship game. Officials say they are hosting the games this year in honor of a board member who’s child died from cancer.

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Today the Monroe Police Department celebrated senior citizens who graduated from the Police Academy. Senior citizens completed a four-week course that began July 10 at the Harvey H. Benoit Community Center. They gained hands-on training, working closely with the Monroe Police Department Bomb Squad, Heat Team, Diving Team, and much more. Senior citizens received first-hand guidance on responding in active crime scenarios. They learned ways to protect their family and community.

BASTROP, La. (KNOE) - The Morehouse Parish School District has added a food truck to its nutrition program for the upcoming school year. The school used funds awarded by the state to purchase the vehicle. “We don’t have public transportation so we wanted to find a way to get to our students so that we could start working on the goal being to feed them twelve months out of the year,” said Ashley White, Morehouse Parish School nutritionist.

RAYVILLE, La. (KNOE) - On July 5, the Rosenwald Eula D. Britton Alumni Association celebrated the 100th year of Eula D. Britton becoming principal at Rayville Rosenwald Alumni Center. The association held its reunion and unveiled a portrait in honor of Eula D. Britton for the efforts she made during her time as principal. As principal she was able to expand the school from a grade school to a high school.

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Office of Ouachita Juvenile Justice is looking to hire employees. This follows the opening of the new Swanson Center for Youth in Monroe. The new center will house 72 youth offenders and have an accredited high school program for students. “It’s about making sure they still get the education, making sure they still get a good night’s rest,” said Swanson Youth Center Director Chad Hardy.

GRAMBLING, La. (KNOE) - The City of Grambling is hosting the 5th Annual Juneteenth Heritage Festival from Saturday, June 8 through Wednesday, June 19. KNOE’s Jasmine Bingham attended the Bake Off, Juneteenth Parade and Entrepreneur Fair. People from all over Northeast Louisiana traveled to the City of Grambling to enjoy games, prizes, baked goods, candy tossing, educational workshops and more.

RUSTON, La. (KNOE) - The Ruston area will be getting its first Louisiana Key Academy, a free charter school for students with Dyslexia. The academy in Ruston will be the fourth academy in Louisiana and will offer free diagnostic tests and education for students with Dyslexia. The academy worked closely with doctors who specialize in Dyslexia research to create a curriculum and learning strategies for students.

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Louisiana Delta Community College partnered with the Ouachita Correctional Center in 2021 to create a welding program to help inmates build skills for the workforce. The program allows inmates to apply for financial aid grants to participate in the course. Inmates looking to enter the welding program are required to complete a background screening, meet behavior requirements, and have completed high school or have a Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED).
