Not only is the Fishing Friendzy Foundation introducing kids and their parents to ethical angling, it’s helping youth become better human beings and further their understanding of how their actions today will affect the future. “That type of thinking can make huge waves throughout our society and make real change for the better,” said Mike Sklad, founder of the non-profit organization, pointing out that teaching a kid to fish is more than it seems.

Petrolia native Cody Chovancek is a fast-rising professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. At press time, he was ranked #4 of 28 active Ontario pro bantamweights, and #11 of 68 in Canada. Earlier last year, he won a Unified MMA match in Niagara Falls that aired on UFC Fight Pass. He has also joined the pro staff for Rapala and 13 Fishing. An outdoor aficionado who loves hunting deer with her dad has won the second annual Outfitter Financial Scholarship for 2024. Olivia Gaeleb, of Havelock, who is now studying kinesiology at the University of Ottawa, won $2,500 to go towards her education. She was joined by family, including dad Chris, as she accepted the prize August 27 from Outfitter Financial owner and head guide Scott Morrow at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) in Peterborough.

They may have come up just short of first place in the 2024 Pan-American Black Bass Championship but leaving New Brunswick with a silver medal and great memories was a big win for the all-star anglers representing Team Canada. “Getting to see the passion that the anglers from countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico and Columbia brought was so cool,” Jeff Gustafson, who was paired with fellow Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Cooper Gallant, wrote via email.

A repeat as Bassmaster Classic champion was not in the cards for Jeff Gustafson, but other Canadian professional anglers had strong showings at the annual event known as the Super Bowl of bass fishing. Justin Hamner, a four-year pro from Northport, Ala, won the three-day event on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in Oklahoma and $300,000 in prize money with a three-day total weight of 58 pounds, 6 ounces.
