Petrolia native Cody Chovancek is a fast-rising professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. At press time, he was ranked #4 of 28 active Ontario pro bantamweights, and #11 of 68 in Canada. Earlier last year, he won a Unified MMA match in Niagara Falls that aired on UFC Fight Pass. He has also joined the pro staff for Rapala and 13 Fishing. Avid deer hunter wins scholarship

An outdoor aficionado who loves hunting deer with her dad has won the second annual Outfitter Financial Scholarship for 2024. Olivia Gaeleb, of Havelock, who is now studying kinesiology at the University of Ottawa, won $2,500 to go towards her education. She was joined by family, including dad Chris, as she accepted the prize August 27 from Outfitter Financial owner and head guide Scott Morrow at the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) in Peterborough.
Team Canada wins Pan-American bass silver

They may have come up just short of first place in the 2024 Pan-American Black Bass Championship but leaving New Brunswick with a silver medal and great memories was a big win for the all-star anglers representing Team Canada. “Getting to see the passion that the anglers from countries like Mexico, Puerto Rico and Columbia brought was so cool,” Jeff Gustafson, who was paired with fellow Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Cooper Gallant, wrote via email.

A repeat as Bassmaster Classic champion was not in the cards for Jeff Gustafson, but other Canadian professional anglers had strong showings at the annual event known as the Super Bowl of bass fishing. Justin Hamner, a four-year pro from Northport, Ala, won the three-day event on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in Oklahoma and $300,000 in prize money with a three-day total weight of 58 pounds, 6 ounces.

For Ontario OUT of DOORS (OOD) Senior Editor Gord Ellis, being inducted into the Canadian Angler Hall of Fame was like being added to a Canuck Mount Rushmore. “It’s a humbling thing to see you all here and know that I’m in this hall of fame,” the writer, broadcaster, and guide told more than 60 outdoors industry representatives gathered on Friday, Feb. 22 at an awards ceremony that kicked off the Spring Fishing & Boat Show at Mississauga’s International Centre.
Province funds wetlands

Two Pickering wetland projects spearheaded by conservation organizations have received a historic $925,000 in provincial funding. The five-year, $20-million Wetlands Conservation Partner Program supports projects. This includes restoring and enhancing large-scale wetlands, smaller wetlands on agricultural lands, and wetlands in more urban areas as part of municipal stormwater management.
Canadian BASS anglers finish strong

All four Canadians on the BASS Elite Series Tour qualified for next year’s Bassmaster Classic after competing in the season-ending Minn Kota Bassmaster Elite at St. Lawrence River in Clayton, New York from August 24 to 27. Two of them finished in the top 10 of the tournament. Otonabee’s Chris Johnston placed second, edged by Patrick Walters of South Carolina. The fifth-year pro caught 105 pounds, the heaviest 20-fish total of smallmouth in Bassmaster history.
At-risk species get boost from province

Some $561,000 in provincial funding is being welcomed by those working to help protect species at risk. The funding for ALUS announced on Monday, Aug. 21 will support a three-year project targeting ecosystems in southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It’s being delivered through the Species at Risk Stewardship Program.
Caribou conservation program launched

Efforts that maintain and recover Ontario caribou populations will get as much as $20 million from the province as part of a new program announced on Thursday, Aug. 17. The Caribou Conservation Stewardship Program will be available to non-profit organizations, Indigenous communities and other groups for conservation activities such as on-the-ground habitat restoration and protection, monitoring, science, and research.
