도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령의 대(對)중국 관세는 미국의 아마존 판매자 및 크고 작은 소매업체들의 운영을 뒤흔들고 있다. 미국으로 제품을 공급하는 중국 제조업체와 유통업체의 비즈니스까지 크게 흔들고 있다. 이제 일부 중국 공급업체는 미국 아마존 판매자에게 간단하면서도 불법적인 해결책을 제안하며 비즈니스를 유지하려 하고 있다. 바로 미국으로 수입되는 아마존 상품의 가치를 거짓으로 낮게 신고해 새로운 고율 관세로 인해 부담해야 할 세금을 줄이는 방식이다. 솔깃한 제안이지만, ‘통관 사기(customs fraud)’에 해당할 공산이 크다. 포춘이 확인한 이메일과 위챗 메시지에 따르면, 가정용품 브랜드를 운영하는 중견 미국 기업의 임원들에게 최소 6곳 이상의 중국 공급업체들이 이러한 불법적 우회 방안을 제안한 것으로 나타났다. 한 공급업체는 “많은 미국 회사들이 관세를 줄이기 위해 낮은 금액의 송장을 이용해 통관한다”면서 “고려해보시라”고 제안했다.
