MONETA — Major League Fishing is coming to Smith Mountain Lake this weekend for its sixth-annual all-star event. B&W Trailer Hitches Heavy Hitters Presented by Bass Pro Shops is a six-day tournament featuring 30 pros anglers. Competition is set to begin Saturday with the top performers moving on to the later rounds until the top 10 remaining compete in the championship round May 22.

Rocky Mount approves budget with some rate increases

ROCKY MOUNT — The town council approved its budget for the 2026 fiscal year Monday, which will include an increase in the cost of some services for residents. Council members unanimously approved a 6% increase to monthly water and wastewater rates. A $2 residential and $4 commercial rate increase for solid waste collection was also approved. There was no discussion before Monday's unanimous vote by the Rocky Mount Town Council.

ROCKY MOUNT — When Franklin County Superintendent of Schools Kevin Siers joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 1989, his grandmother made sure to fix him a plate of homemade biscuits and gravy before he left. It was a tradition that his grandmother started when his grandfather left to serve in the Army in World War II. While it was a meal she cooked almost daily, Siers said she made sure to have it for any family member who was heading off to serve.
Two arrested in connection to murder of a Franklin County woman

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two men in connection with the killing of a Callaway woman Monday. Corion Devontae Manns, 22, of Henry, and Isaiah Kahlil Witcher, 25, of Bassett, were taken into custody Tuesday. Deputies found Emily Grace Keen, 24, dead in her vehicle late Monday with apparent gunshot wounds in the 500 block of Holley Ridge Road in Henry. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said its investigators do not believe this was a random shooting.

A Callaway woman was the victim of a homicide in the Henry area of Franklin County late Monday. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office responded to a report just before midnight Monday of an unresponsive female in the 500 block of Holley Ridge Road. When deputies arrived they found a deceased woman in a vehicle with apparent gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
