Women have served in the U.S. military in various capacities for more than two centuries, overcoming barriers to take on greater roles in leadership, combat, and beyond. While they have officially held combat roles since the 1990s, it was not until 2015 that all combat positions were opened to them, marking a significant breakthrough in their full integration into the armed forces. Today, they make up of the total force, serving in every branch and achieving milestones once thought unattainable.

KING CITY — After a loss in the Central Coast Section (CCS) play-in game, the King City Mustangs’ hopes of getting into the softball playoffs were up to the CCS committee, which ultimately placed them into the CCS Division V playoff bracket. After making the postseason for three years in a row, the Lady Mustangs’ playoff streak was on the line after losing 13-1 to North Salinas in the May 10 play-in game.

KING CITY — While Watsonville has locked up the Mission Division softball title, King City, Pacific Grove and Carmel were separated by one game going into the final week. The importance in that is only three teams from the Mission earn automatic Central Coast Section (CCS) playoff berths. As the regular season came to an end, King City Mustangs softball team found themselves on the right side of the playoff bubble.

SOLEDAD — Soledad Aztecs baseball team has set themselves up in a perfect position, as they swept the North Salinas Vikings to stay atop the Mission Division. After splitting their season series against Stevenson the week prior, the Aztecs placed first in the league. They led the Mission Division with a league record of 10-2 to Stevenson’s 8-3. This past week, the Aztecs had a match with North Salinas. On paper, Soledad should have had the upper hand against the Vikings.

SOLEDAD — Soledad Aztecs baseball team split their two-game season series with the Stevenson Pirates, which kept Soledad in first as they moved to 10-2 in the Mission Division. Going into last week, the Mission Division saw a cluster of teams with the same record. Among those, Soledad, Stevenson and Alisal were the teams on top of the league.

SALINAS VALLEY — Coming into this high school baseball season, the Soledad Aztecs had to replace a lot of players from last year’s team, which included a Division I player. But head baseball coach Damien Ryan and his coaching staff have the Aztecs in title contention again after they swept their South Monterey County rival, the King City Mustangs, in their season series. When a team loses a lot of seniors, normally it takes a year or two to rebuild.

KING CITY — After dropping their first league game to Watsonville, the King City High School softball team has won five straight games that have put them in first place in the Mission Division. In what many considered a down year for the Lady Mustangs, last season they still managed to make the playoffs and the team they beat, North Salinas High School, made it to the CIF finals.

SOLEDAD — Oregon State freshman pitcher Eric Segura was on a hot streak winning his last three starts, but this past week in his first PAC-12 league start didn’t go as well. Entering the week, the Soledad High alum was 3-0 going into his first career start in the PAC-12. In his last start against CSUN, Segura matched his career high with seven strikeouts while only allowing two runs in five innings of work in the Beavers’ four-game sweep.

KING CITY — King City High School girls’ softball team got off to a great start in this year’s season, going 3-1 while playing in the Mission Division. In those four games, the Lady Mustangs were able to beat Greenfield, Marina and Templeton. Their only loss came to an Alisal team that is currently 6-1. Despite the strong start, the Mustangs have lost their last two games. They dropped a close game to Atascadero, 6-5, and then were blanked by Ann Sobrato of Morgan Hill, 8-0.

SOLEDAD — Soledad High alum Eric Segura moves to 2-0 after his second career win against North Dakota State. In his third start of the college baseball season, the former Aztec has helped produce three wins for the nationally ranked Oregon State Beavers this season. After his first start, where he got a “no decision,” Segura has received the run support he needs to pick up two wins in his last two outings. So far Segura is 2-0 with an ERA just over 3.
