On Thursday night, they have an opportunity to make it two after defeating Vegas 4-2 in the opening game of the series. Connor McDavid joked they don’t know what to do in this situation, because they rarely win the opening game of a series. They improved to 4-10 in Game 1s with the win, and the only time they swept the first two games was their 2017 second round series vs. Anaheim.

They beat us in every area of the game,” said Hiller. “They were just better. The silver lining for the Edmonton Oilers after losing the first two games of this series against the Los Angeles Kings was that they had many areas to improve upon. They didn’t play great and lose. They struggled in many facets, and they knew if they cleaned up some areas they could compete. They weren’t perfect in Game 3 on Friday, but they were much better in some key aspects of their game, and that allowed them to win and get back in the series. Santa Claus didn’t make an appearance.

The easy, and frankly lazy, analysis of the Edmonton Oilers is that they have to start Calvin Pickard in Game 3. I could see that happening. But if the Oilers continue to play sloppily, and the penalty kill continues giving up 10-bell chances, it won’t matter who’s in net. If your first thought is to blame Stuart Skinner for the Oilers being down 2-0 in this first-round series with the Los Angeles Kings, I recommend re-watching the games.

The first 38 minutes of last night’s game were the most uneventful playoff matches I’ve seen the Edmonton Oilers play. They had eight shots on goal, but none inside 10 feet and only two inside 29 feet. They didn’t match Los Angeles’s passion and intensity. The Oilers went 16:53 without a shot on goal, starting with 6:07 remaining in the first period until 10:46 into the second frame. It’s very difficult to win if you go 28 percent of the game without a shot on goal.

Troy Stecher hasn’t been seen since playing in Winnipeg last Sunday. He hasn’t skated and wasn’t on the ice in San Jose yesterday as the Oilers prepared for Game 1 of their opening-round series vs. Los Angeles. With Mattias Ekholm out for the series and now Stecher, it looks like Josh Brown could play his fourth NHL playoff game Monday night. Brown has had a challenging season. He signed a three-year deal on July 1 and expected to be with the Oilers.
