The sixth song on Gillian Welch and David Rawlings’ new album Woodland is a tender ode to one of the duo’s early champions, the Texas singer-songwriter Guy Clark, who died in 2016. It’s called “Hashtag.” If you know Welch and Rawlings’ work, which draws from some of American music’s deepest, oldest aquifers—Appalachian folk music, bluegrass, primal country—the idea of a Welch/Rawlings song with that word in it is jarring.
