However, its epicenter is Uptown Plaza on Central Avenue and Camelback Road, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Here’s to the late bloomers. In 2015, Arizona State University product Merrill Kelly had five solid minor league seasons under his belt but was getting paid peanuts while waiting to be called up to “The Show.” So, the then-26-year-old flipped the script and went to play in Korea. The rest is history.

Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has described live jazz as “the power of now,” where music is created almost instantaneously through telepathic conversations between the musicians. Due to jazz club closures during the pandemic, audiences have had fewer opportunities to see these melodic conversations. But in the Valley, renewed interest in the genre has created spaces for musicians to connect with audiences where few if any existed before.
