FAYETTEVILLE — As those accompanying them brought out their binoculars, a pair of librarians from the Fayetteville Free Library led a birdwatching walk in Green Lakes State Park the morning of March 27. The hike started at the park’s Environmental Education Center and went around to the other side of the lake and back, with pit stops at spots like the wooden walkway by the beach.

TOWN OF DEWITT – On Saunday, April 6, shoppers at the DeWitt Wegmans on were treated to an in-store matzah-making demonstration. The model matzah bakery courtesy of Chabad Lubavitch of Central New York was meant to “bring to life” the spring holiday of Passover and give a hands-on baking experience to all participants who stopped by, whether or not they celebrate the eight-day Jewish festival.

VILLAGE OF MANLIUS – Local police are currently investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Manlius that occurred over the weekend. Just after 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, members of the Town of Manlius Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Elmbrook Drive near Garrett Drive in the village of Manlius in response to a reported shots fired complaint and a motor vehicle crash.

FAYETTEVILLE — After seeing trash tossed to the roadside time and time again on his daily walks, one Fayetteville man decided to make a habit of actively cleaning up all the litter in his path. Before retiring, Hugh Gunnison worked with two-way radios and passive filter products, spending a total of 32 years as a bench technician for United Radio.

EASTERN SUBURBS – The local St. Mary’s and Christ Church fish fries are continuing through the rest of Lent, with the last of those dinners at both sites being held April 18, which is Good Friday. Christ Church, located at 407 E. Seneca St. in Manlius, offers takeout only for its dinners. Those meals consist of fish with french fries, coleslaw and a roll. People can order from Christ Church by calling ahead at 315-682-5795 and picking a pickup time between 4 and 7 p.m. on Fridays.

BISHOP GRIMES JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL – Over the weekend, Bishop Grimes Jr./Sr. High School presented “Mamma Mia!” as the last-ever musical staged inside its Kirkville Road building in East Syracuse. But despite the planned closure of the private Roman Catholic school and its merging with Bishop Ludden, the cast and crew were able to place their sadness to the side for two hours and convey to the crowd utter joy with the jukebox musical featuring the hit songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA.

TOWN OF DEWITT – The DeWitt Town Board has officially decided to dissolve East Syracuse’s fire protection district, making way for the expansion of DeWitt’s fire district into the northern part of the town the village volunteers had long covered. The decision was reached March 25 at the DeWitt Town Hall after an approximately two-hour special meeting, which contained a lengthy public comment period and a room packed to the brim with local firefighters and other residents.
