Tayshaun Scott, a senior at Hickory High School, signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute on Wednesday. Caldwell competes at the NJCAA Division III level. Kasen Tuttle, a senior at Hickory High School, signed his National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Catawba College. Catawba is a NCAA Division II school. The Catawba Indians compete in the South Atlantic Conference.

The Newton-Conover boys basketball team has made some adjustments over the past month. With the departure of Owen and Noah Cannon prior to the Christmas tournament, the Red Devils had to find more scoring. “We went through struggles scoring,” said head coach Nicholas Wilson. “We went through about three or four games there where we couldn’t score more than 40 or 43 points.”The issue has been addressed, as two juniors and a sophomore point guard have plugged the scoring hole.

With his ninth rebound in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic Christmas tournament semifinal game on Dec. 28, Raheim Misher became the first basketball player in Maiden High School history to reach 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. Misher passed 1,000 career points last March and finished his junior season at 880 rebounds. During his four years at Maiden, Misher has averaged nearly 14.5 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Maiden High School junior Khiara Culliver, a girls basketball player, scored her 1,000th career point in a 67-45 win over Bandys High School at home on Wednesday. The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after multiple Bandys turnovers and a trio of early threes from Raegan Rembert, Willow Bass and Amelia Beal. Culliver controlled the ball early on the defensive side. She blocked two of Lexi Vaughan's shots in the early game, scored in the paint and hit a free throw.
