CALEDON, Ont. – By now the Canadians in the field at the RBC Canadian Open — as well the fans who come to cheer them on — know the drill. When a homegrown player steps onto the tee deck of the tournament’s “Rink Hole” — at Hamilton, St. George’s, Oakdale and now here at TPC Toronto — the supporters serenade him with the national anthem. This is especially true in the afternoon, when lager sales soar and the crowds are larger and looser.

CALEDON, Ont. – Only in golf is 12 not necessarily halfway to 24. Through 36 holes of the first RBC Canadian Open contested at TPC Toronto, Cameron Champ leads at a dozen under par thanks largely to the 62 he carded on Thursday afternoon. He followed that low score with a 66 in the second round and so far he hasn’t made any bogeys. But Champ, who began the week as the eighth alternate, has definitely benefited from the draw.

CALEDON, Ont. – The par-3 seventh hole on the North Course at TPC Toronto measured 226 yards on Thursday and featured a flagstick in the front-right portion of the green, the one part of the putting surface not guarded by deep bunkers. The pin was exposed, but not easy to get to at that yardage. Taylor Pendrith, fresh off a birdie on the sixth hole, took dead aim at it with a 5-iron, flighting down a ball that never strayed from its target.

CALEDON, Ont. – Nick Taylor took his place behind the mic in the RBC Canadian Open media centre Wednesday and behind him was a backdrop featuring 24 tournament logos. Two bigger logos fronted the dais and of course there are hundreds of them peppered throughout TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. All with Taylor’s silhouette. Even if he wanted to — and why would he ever?

CALEDON, Ont. — He knew the question was coming and he had something of a throwaway response ready, but Rory McIlroy couldn’t help himself. On Wednesday at the RBC Canadian Open, the two-time tournament champion was asked about not taking questions at the PGA Championship last month, his most recent start. It was that week that his driver failed a conforming test and was taken out of play.
