RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit (NEN MCU) is seeking information in relation to two deaths that have been ruled as homicides in Colchester County over the holidays. On December 19, at approximately 9:15 p.m., Truro Police Service (TPS) received information that a 27-year-old Truro man and a 25-year-old Pictou Landing First Nation man attended hospital with serious injuries consistent with stab wounds.

Mayor Rod Gilroy signed a proclamation this week declaring December 3, 2024 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities Day in the Municipality of Cumberland. The day aims to increase awareness of and promote the rights and well being of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life. A Canadian survey from 2022 shows 27 percent of Canadians, 15 years and older, have one or more disabilities that limit them in their daily lives.

Employees from the Municipality of Cumberland took part in an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup event recently. They worked along the ditches and dirt between Fenwick Church to the Little Forks Road, (7.5 kms) cleaning up garbage and debris along Highway 2. This is part of an effort to beautify Cumberland County and the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Municipality of Cumberland hosted a talking circle in honour of National Truth & Reconciliation Day (NTRD) on September 30. The day recognizes and honours the survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Carol Ann Knockwood remembers what it was like growing up as a Mi’Kmaw child in Springhill. She spent five years at a residential school and wants to share the experience with others. “They were the five most terrible years of my life,” Knockwood said.
