Clouds drifted in and out of the D.C. area before dawn Friday, offering enough open sky for photographers around the region to capture views of the total lunar eclipse. The spectacle began at 11:57 p.m. Thursday and ended at 6 a.m. Friday as a partial eclipse. The total eclipse was about an hour long, starting at 2:26 a.m.The eclipse occurred as Earth passed between the sun and the moon. That blocked direct sunlight from reaching and illuminating the moon.

Because of the chilly winter, it has taken D.C.’s famed cherry trees at the Tidal Basin a little longer than normal to wake up. But, spurred by the sunny, mild weather in recent days, their blossoms reached the first stage of development on Tuesday — when green buds emerged, according to the National Park Service. Before peak bloom, the buds progress through five stages: green buds, florets visible, extension of florets, peduncle elongation and puffy blossoms.
