    In 2019, Gehrig Tucker, now 29, joined the Army. While he was going through the Special Forces Qualification Course, he suffered two traumatic brain injuries that drastically impacted his cognitive ability. “I had to write down the steps on how to change my oil,” he said. “Something I’ve done a thousand times, and I would have to write that down.” Tucker, a Carson City native, was also diagnosed with major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress.

    A year ago, Jennifer Shane’s teenage son asked,“Mom, do you have any friends?” The optometrist, now 54, paused. As a single mother and business owner, her friendships were lacking—but since she started playing pickleball in October 2022, her friend network has grown immensely. “Sixteen of my friends are from pickleball,” she said. According to Shane, some wonderful people she’s met while playing the sport get together off the court as well. “I’m dating a pilot,” said Shane.

    Owen Gray of Reno prepared to exit his cabin and change shifts with his boat partner as the pair rowed across the mid-Pacific Ocean—just as a large flying fish hopped aboard their boat, uninvited. The fish was very upset. “It sounded like it was right outside my door, because they go crazy when they land on the boat,” said Gray, 57. He yelled to his rowing partner, Jayme Linker, 35, of Colorado. “I was like, ‘I’m not coming out,’” Gray said.

    Thain and his younger brother, Tanner, both high school students, recently entered the storefront at Project 150 Reno empty-handed. They left weighed down with bags of clothes, food, school supplies and hygiene products. While the pair waited outside for their foster mother to pick them up, they were offered cold drinks and snacks by one of the organization’s volunteers. Thain, who will be a senior in the fall, was sporting his new jacket, despite the summer heat.
