CROMWELL, Conn. — Professional golfers will often refer to their hometown event as a “fifth major” and I suppose that goes for others around the game, too. I lived not too far from TPC River Highlands for a decade-and-a-half and I’m so excited to be back at a tournament that wholly deserves its meteoric rise in importance over the past few years. This story has been told before, but it’s worth retelling this week.

OAKMONT, Pa. — The following is a true story which might not rank in Oakmont lore amongst Johnny Miller’s final-round 63, but served prescient nonetheless. On Wednesday, prior to the opening round of the 125th U.S. Open Championship, an ESPN camera crew wanted to show the world just how impossible it is to putt this course’s severe, sloping, slippery greens and asked J.J. Spaun to demonstrate. Only one problem: He couldn’t miss.

OAKMONT, Pa. — Round 1 of the 125th U.S. Open Championship is in the books and J.J. Spaun is the leader after a dazzling bogey-free 4-under 66, but it’s Oakmont Country Club which was the winner for the day, as just 10 players in the 156-man field finished in red figures. Let’s get to some live options as we head toward the final 54 holes. OUTRIGHTSJon Rahm (+550)I really liked the 2021 U.S. Open champion before the week began and I like him even more after an opening 69.

OAKMONT, Pa. – Just over a half-century ago, in the midst of a U.S. Open which would later be dubbed, “The Massacre at Winged Foot,” USGA championship chairman Sandy Tatum offered what has become the most definitive description of this tournament. “Our objective is not to humiliate the best players in the world,” he said.

Welcome to the 125th U.S. Open Championship, where it appears the tournament will still be contested, despite everyone wanting to hand the trophy to Scottie Scheffler already. That includes the oddsmakers, who have enlisted Scheffler as a rare +275 favorite at BetMGM against the other 155 players in the field at Oakmont Country Club, which makes Scheffler the biggest favorite to win the event since 2009, when Tiger Woods was +175 (thank you, SportsOddsHistory).
