Suddenly, Scotland's championship is at a huge turning point. After the agonising one-point defeat at Twickenham nine days ago, Gregor Townsend's side are left facing a nightmare scenario. Wales, their next opponents, were on a hiding to nothing before Warren Gatland was replaced by Matt Sherratt, and suddenly are not out of it when they come to Murrayfield on Saturday. Lose there, and Scotland would be entering the final weekend and a trip to Paris still only one one win for the tournament.

What were your main takeaways from the win over Australia? Who stood out and what impressed you about Scotland’s performance? Calum Crowe: In the second half, Scotland were outstanding. In terms of the level of opponent, that was probably their best 40 minutes of rugby all year. Blair Kinghorn was named man of the match and it was hard to argue with that given his involvement in so many of Scotland’s best moments in attack. But Jamie Ritchie also had an excellent game.

It has all been a bit stop-start for Scotland with the South Africa match being sandwiched by two non-events against Fiji and Portugal. Do they need to beat Australia for it to be a successful autumn campaign? Calum Crowe: Yeah, 100 per cent. Let’s not beat around the bush here. We were playing against Fiji’s reserves and a Portugal team who are part-time and ranked No 15 in the world.
