While poop is decidedly not on the menu for us humans, it’s a normal food for many animals. Scientists have observed deer snacking on Asian elephant dung, dogs and lemurs consuming human poop, and salamanders eating bat droppings. In Spain’s Sierra de Guara mountains, female goats snack on bird guano, while in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, rats and opossums visit otter latrines to consume feces.

Florin Horia Baros waits outside his two-story,wood-shingle farmhouse in Sătic, a village in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, his face like thunder. Around midnight the farmer was startled by a commotion from the sheds holding his pigs. “The bear came along the street, over the fence, broke the door off the shed, and attacked the pigs. I chased him off with my dogs,” he says. Hours later, the brown bear circled back, targeting another shed. Now, two pigs lie dead in the yard.

Pantone has announced its color of the year, mocha mousse, which highlights the hue’s link with comfort and indulgence. The shade “extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe,” Pantone’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman said along with the announcement. As it does every year, the color not only represents design trends but also the current culture.
