A few summers ago I got caught up in the frenzied emptying of dusty cardboard boxes, folding my undies in a new fancy way and asking a forgotten melon baller “do you bring me joy?” Having control over something, anything, when your life is one tumbling hyperfixation adventure after another was very seductive. I don’t have many regrets in life but I do regret letting go of several tubs of embroidery supplies.

Could you go meat-free? We asked three omnivorous Australian households to cook vegetarian meals for a week and to keep a diary of their results. Eggs and dairy products were allowed but all other animal proteins including seafood were not. The results? Two households saved time and money, while one family actually spent more dollars and minutes preparing meat-free meals. And those with children had a more difficult time switching to a temporary vegetarian diet.

Advice can be a funny thing. It can slide off like Teflon or land right where, and when, you need it. Back in 2017 my mate Kearnsie had popped round for a cuppa and a chat. As we sat in the sunny kitchen with tea and bickies, I looked through the goodies she’d brought along for my wife and I’s pending arrival. After four years of trying, our first kid was on the way. Blooming beautifully in my wife’s belly. We knew everything would change, and to be frank, we were freaking out.
