Early on, Carney took decisive action to try to clearly distance himself from the Trudeau legacy. He signed an Order in Council to set the consumer carbon tax rate to zero. He promised to scrap the Trudeau government’s planned capital gains tax hike. And he made a middle-class income tax cut the centrepiece of his election platform, recognizing Canadians were hard done by after years of Liberal tax hikes. The childishness of the Trudeau era also seems to be in the rear-view mirror.

Carney largely rode on a wave of anti-Trump sentiment to earn a fourth consecutive Liberal term in government. But what exactly does Carney mean by elbows up? Is it anything more than an empty slogan? Canadians will soon find out. If Carney wants to get Canada’s elbows up against the United States, he should put his money where his mouth is and adopt policies that make Canada’s economy less dependent on the Americans. That doesn’t mean more government. It means less of it.
