When I heard about Rodney Hinton Jr., my heart did not just break, it burned. Not because I agree with what authorities in Ohio say he did — hitting a killing a sheriff’s deputy with his vehicle — but because I understand the kind of pain that can drive a man to completely lose control.

They always say forgiveness is for you, not the person who hurt you, and deep down, I believe that. I know the right thing to do is forgive my father for not being around during my childhood. I’ve heard it a hundred times: “Let it go,” “He did the best he could,” “You’re only hurting yourself.”But the truth is, forgiving him is easier said than done.
