Philosopher and educator George Santayana once stated that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”The Halifax County Historical Society is working to make sure that this does not happen. On Sunday, the historical society held a ribbon-cutting event at the Chaffin House, located on Mountain Road in the town of Halifax. The house now serves as the society’s home and research center. A number of people gathered on the home’s front porch, awaiting the official opening.

In a contest that proved to be a clash of styles, Halifax County’s passing game proved to be stronger than Mecklenburg County’s running game and the Comets beat the Phoenix 21-14. The first offensive series for each team set the tone for the game. Mecklenburg County continually ran the ball while Halifax County stuck to the passing attack. The Phoenix ran the ball on four straight plays, including on a fourth down when an apparent first down was negated by a holding penalty on Mecklenburg County.
