1. IntroductionGlia, which constitute roughly half the cells in the central nervous system (CNS), have essential yet distinct roles in supporting neuronal homeostasis and signal transduction (Allen and Lyons, 2018). In particular, astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes are necessary for regulating synaptic function, contributing to metabolic support, creating myelin sheaths for signal transduction, and in the CNS immune response (Somjen, 1988; Tomassy et al., 2016; von Bartheld et al., 2016).
