Deputy Higher Education Minister Mimmy Gondwe says the department is clamping down on unregistered educational institutions that exploit vulnerable students seeking affordable education in South Africa. Gondwe is visiting such colleges and private institutions of higher education in the Durban CBD in KwaZulu-Natal which has the second highest concentration of tertiary students in the country. She says her department is receiving complaints about unregistered institutions from across the country.

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed that seven learners from Bongucele Secondary School in Mthwalume on the South Coast of the province, have been treated at a clinic for alleged food poisoning, after consuming snacks at a nearby tuckshop. The Department says the pupils were suffering from diarrhea and vomiting and were taken to the clinic to be treated. Six of the learners have been discharged whilst the 7th, who is pregnant is being kept for observation.

In a recent report, Durban's eThekwini Metro has found that the unemployment rate in informal settlements in the city is at a staggering 91%. The report also says that more than half of the population in informal settlements comprised internal migrants from the Eastern Cape.
