I was nervous when I knocked on the door of Spinal Network in August of 1991. My internship coordinator had told me that it was the best magazine published in Boulder, Colorado, so it was my first choice for learning on the job as I earned my master’s in journalism. A tall, toothy guy who reminded me of both David Letterman and Alfred E. Neuman answered the door. “I want to be your intern,” I said without much prelude. “Come on in,” he said, cracking that crooked smile.
