As 2024 comes to a close, we at the Green Economy Coalition have been reflecting on a couple of important trends that have shaping global politics and economics over the past 12 months: fragmentation of the political centre, the curse of incumbency, greater economic and social volatility, and ever-increasing polarisation of the electorate. Successive climate talks have been assessed by the result of financialcommitments: how much, from whom, by whom, for what and by when has informed the judgement of whether a COP has been a success.

"Turn and face the strange" David Bowie famously sang in Changes. This sentiment feels especially apt in today’s world. As we navigate these changes, the call for transformation grows louder, echoing the need to reshape our global financial systems to better meet the demands of the future. We seem to be moving from one "crucial opportunity" to the next, creating a sense of fatigue and confusion as key summits blur together.

The Green Economy Coalition (GEC) is the world's largest alliance dedicated to accelerating the transition to a green, fair and inclusive economy. Founded in 2009, the GEC brings together around 65 members, including citizen groups, civil society, research organisations, and UN entities, united in the belief that our economic system needs fundamental change. We are now looking for a Convenor to join us on a full-time, permanent basis, working 35 hours per week.

We’re nearly two-thirds of the way through 2024 – the “year of elections”, when democracy itself is supposedly on the ballot – and for us, three things have become clear. Firstly, the climate crisis is accelerating. Secondly, mainstream political parties are flailing, as inflation, polarisation and extremism destabilise the centre ground.

On Wednesday July 10th, our GEC Commons and Campaigns working group held a special one-off edition of our regular webinar, exploring the impact so far of the 2024 elections around the world on future sustainability and climate policies. With presenters covering recent elections in Mexico, India, South Africa, the European Union, and the UK, as well as environmental progress in Brazil, the call explored a number of trends emerging from democratic processes around the world.
