Term has finished at the University of Manchester. I teach one term a year on the master’s in creative writing. I was born in Manchester, and, although I don’t want to live in the north any more (I made a life in the south in my early twenties), I enjoy the cheerful, quick-witted northern spirit. People readily talk to you up there, without assuming you are a drug addict or a psycho if you talk to them. In Manchester, smiling at a stranger does not make you a weirdo.

Since Trump and Vance bullied Zelenskyy at the White House, threatening to pull out of supporting Ukraine, calling Ukraine the aggressor who doesn’t want peace, we have watched Europe rush to their treasuries to find staggering sums of money for weapons. This is essential, we are told, because of Trump’s new world order. The biggest crisis facing human life on earth is not Trump or Putin. The biggest crisis facing human life on earth is climate breakdown.

Best decision you ever made? Deciding not to kill myself in Ibiza when I was 24 years old. I was on a cliff a short distance away from the villa where we lived, and I fantasised about it and very nearly did take my own life. For a short while after that I wished I had, because I was in such a deep state of depression that I could see no future.

I think of AI as alternative intelligence. John McCarthy’s 1956 definition of artificial (distinct from natural) intelligence is old fashioned in a world where most things are either artificial or unnatural. Ultraprocessed food, flying, web-dating, fabrics, make your own list. Physicist and AI commentator, Max Tegmark, told the AI Action Summit in Paris, in February, that he prefers “autonomous intelligence”.

I can’t believe I have just read that David Cameron who is not an MP has been given a peerage so that he come into Govt as Foreign Secretary. Any more evidence needed that the Tories don’t do democracy ?

I read that Boris Johnson calls himself a ‘caged beast’ & ‘coiled mamba’ since his ousting as PM. Nadine Dorries worships her tragic hero who worships himself only. Look what happened when he was uncaged & uncoiled & in charge of the country. Britain is a Boris disaster-zone

What is the matter with this fucking world ? So much hatred . So much destruction. All those AI dystopias are a joke. We can ruin life all by ourselves . The saddest thing is that we take the planet and its life with us. We had everything right here and look what we do
