    The University of North Florida announced its first Doctor of Philosophy program today. The Ph.D. in computing is now accepting applications for the fall 2024 semester. UNF already offers several doctoral degrees, including the Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Education, but this is the first traditional research-based Doctor of Philosophy program.

    The University of North Florida told faculty about a new policy earlier this year that would allow them to teach fewer classes per semester in return for increased research assignments. When UNF’s chapter of the United Faculty of Florida issued a cease and desist letter on May 13, the next day the university said it would not be complying. UFF then sent a “demand to bargain” letter to the university’s chief negotiator, Michael Mattimore, on May 15.

    Spinnaker‘s former editor-in-chief, Carter Mudgett, placed 12th among the top 20 students for the national Hearst Investigative Competition Award, according to Wednesday’s results. Mudgett graduated earlier this month with a Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Journalism. He placed in this competition with an investigation into the University of North Florida’s handling of a sexual assault case that was published in December 2023.

    Thirteen of the 16 University of North Florida pro-Palestine protestors returned to court for arraignment Monday, where they all entered not-guilty pleas for the misdemeanor trespass charges. They were arrested on May 2 after refusing to leave campus by the 10 p.m. curfew imposed by the UNF Police Department. The group refers to itself as the Jax 16.

    At least 16 pro-Palestine protestors were released from the John E. Goode Pre-trial Detention Facility on Friday afternoon after they were arrested Thursday night for violating their 10 p.m. curfew on the University of North Florida Green. According to UNF, 16 protestors were arrested, eight being students. Students for a Democratic Society, the group that organized the protest, said 17 were arrested, 11 students and six others.
