McMinnville City Manager Jeff Towery’s resignation announcement sparked a flurry of community talk, news stories and commentary, all of which will continue with background of the semi-charged politics of this city. One insider even suggested the controversial Pride Month issue might develop into major conflict between Towery and the city council, but my sources tell me that’s not going to happen. That doesn’t mean the subject should be taboo for comment.

Activation of new U.S. tariffs began in February and has continued relentlessly, with unnerving and globally distressing starts and stops. On April 23, 12 state attorneys general led by Oregon AG Dan Rayfield filed suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade, asserting that Donald Trump exceeded presidential authority for tariff actions that required congressional approval.

Plans for major renovation of downtown McMinnville infrastructure have been studied, debated, expanded, delayed, amended and delayed again to the point of great financial uncertainty. The long-promised final plan goes to the Urban Renewal Agency — i.e. city council — in early June, but the dollars remain in question.
