Blake Brown went back to his old Kentucky home as the winner of last Saturday’s Cumberland Plateau Open Wheel Modified race at Volunteer Speedway. Brown held off the challenge of Chris Wilson from Crossville at the 4/10-mile dirt track with Gatlinburg driver Adam Ogle third. Jeff Ferguson from Limestone was the top finisher among Tri-Cities area drivers, eighth in the 30-lap feature. Johnny Mitchell from Jonesborough posted a 12th-place finish.

Mike Poe is best known for his success as a basketball coach. He recently hit a major milestone on the golf course. Poe won 651 basketball games as a head coach at the high school level with David Crockett, Science Hill and Volunteer, and collegiately with Tennessee Wesleyan. Now living in Loudon, Poe hit the century mark in golf with his 100th tournament win in April and then added a 101st victory a couple of weeks ago. He credits good health as a major reason for his longevity.

The East Tennessee State baseball team learned Monday they will face Louisville on Friday 2 p.m. in the Nashville Region of the NCAA baseball tournament at Vanderbilt. It will be the first appearance for the Southern Conference champion Bucs (41-15) since winning the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament in 2013, and the fifth appearance in the NCAA tournament overall.
