That’s why his time with the Elizabethton River Riders in the Appalachian League is key. Berry was red-shirted his freshman season and didn’t appear in any games in a historic season for the Bucs. Playing in the Appalachian League is his chance to have that game experience he missed out on last season. “This summer league sort helps so much,” he said.

    The needs were clear for new East Tennessee State football coach Will Healy and staff when it came to the defense. They had to get more athleticism on the defensive line and in the backfield. The Bucs were successfully able to recruit both areas, starting with redshirt sophomore Brian Alston from Arkansas State on the defensive line. Alston, 6-foot-2 and 264 pounds, was the No. 69 rated edge rusher in the country out of high school.

    East Tennessee State was the talk of the FCS football world when the Bucs landed two Power 4 quarterbacks from the transfer portal. Cade McNamara from Michigan and later Iowa committed to the Bucs along with Jacolby Criswell from Arkansas and later North Carolina. It completely changed the quarterback room with last year’s starter for nine games, Jaylen King, and Baylor Hayes, who started the season finale both transferring out.
