GREENEVILLE — Diego Silva had a hat trick as David Crockett pulled off perhaps its biggest upset in program history with a 4-2 win over Greeneville in Tuesday night’s Region 1-AA semifinal at Burley Stadium. The Pioneers advanced to Thursday’s championship game at Tennessee High. With Tuesday’s win, they also clinched a berth in the sectional round. “All we talked about in our game plan was this was a win or go-home game,” Crockett coach Chris Kudera said.

The goal is within reach. East Tennessee State has the opportunity to win its first regular-season conference baseball title since the Charley Lodes-coached teams of the early 1980s. The Bucs, who have won 12 of their last 14 games, have already compiled the program’s third most wins in a single season with a 37-13 overall record. They’ve set the single-season home run record with 109 which shattered the previous record of 93 dingers.

Volunteer Speedway fans were treated to exciting sprint car and dirt late model action last Saturday night at the 4/10-mile clay oval. There was a big turnout at the Bulls Gap track with over 100 cars overall. Jadan Bowling from Holden Beach, N.C., was the winner in the 25-lap Carolina Sprint Tour feature. He came from a fourth-place starting spot to finish ahead of Kansas driver Cale Cozad. George Loux, another North Carolina driver, racer finished third.

KINGSPORT — There was another all-Science Hill doubles final at Monday’s Region 1-AA individual tennis championships which were moved indoors to Ridgefields Country Club. Shreeyan Papireedy and Newton Raff took a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hilltopper teammates Cooper Weems and Joe Luna who had beaten them a week before in the District 1-AA final. “We played a lot better than we did at districts,” Papireddy said. “We were mentally ready today and there was a lot better tennis from us.

KNOXVILLE — David Crockett’s Aaliyah Story and Volunteer’s Aliah Laster rose above the competition at the Class AA East Section track and field meet Saturday at the University of Tennessee. Story went 5-feet-6 in the high jump, also won the long jump where she is defending state champion with a 17-06.50 leap and finished fourth in the 200 meters. Laster cleared 11-feet-6 in the pole vault, a foot higher than anyone else, and was fourth in the girls’ pentathlon.

ETSU closes home season with win over Wofford

East Tennessee State defeated Wofford in Sunday’s home finale at Thomas Stadium to win the weekend series and move one step closer to its first conference regular-season championship in 43 years. With Sunday’s 9-3 victory, the Bucs (37-13, 13-5 Southern Conference) moved into third place for the program’s most wins in a single season. ETSU holds a one-game lead over Samford in the SoCon standings as the Bucs head into a final three-game series at The Citadel next weekend.
