KINGSPORT — T.J. Maxwell and his Dobyns-Bennett teammates finished off the Tribe Classic in style on Saturday. Maxwell drove in five runs as the Indians rolled to an 18-4 win over Gate City on Saturday at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. With the bases loaded in the second inning, Maxwell stepped up and delivered a three-run triple. Two innings later, he came through with a monster home run over right field which scored two more runs.

KINGSPORT — Mike Potter was remembered at Kingsport Speedway before Friday night’s racing program featuring the touring Super Cup Series. Potter, a Johnson City driver who died in 2022, competed at stock car racing’s highest levels with 60 starts in the NASCAR Cup Series. Potter won a race in the Super Cup Series in Ohio when he was 70 years old. He was also a successful car owner in the series. His former driver, Ben Ebeling, swept 40-lap features at Kingsport’s 3/8-mile concrete oval.

Holly Springs Has Strong Start to IHRA Summit SuperSeries Season HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — Holly Springs Motorsports Park continues to have a strong IHRA Summit SuperSeries racing program. The North Mississippi track, which hosted the IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals from 2021-24, had a great turnout for a pair of points races last weekend. Buddy Ferrell, the reigning IHRA Division 2 Summit Team Finals champion, was victorious both days in Super Pro.

JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill is still setting a high standard in local high school tennis. The Hilltoppers beat Dobyns-Bennett 8-1 in a Big East Conference showdown Thursday evening at the Pete Zannis Tennis Center. Likewise, the Science Hill girls rolled to a 9-0 win over the Lady Indians. Science Hill’s boys have made the state tournament every year since 2019 with the exception of the 2020 COVID season. They were challenged in some spots Thursday, but were able to stay in control of the match.

The East Tennessee State basketball team has another pair of commitments from Division I transfers, while a quarterback from the football team has entered the transfer portal. Brian Taylor II, a 6-foot-4 junior guard from SIU-Edwardsville, and Jordan McCullum, a 6-foot-8 forward who played his freshman season at Murray State, have committed to the Bucs basketball program.

KINGSPORT — The Daniel Boone boys are the Big 10 Conference track and field champions for the first time in a decade. Winning their first title since 2015, the Trailblazers edged Science Hill 143-140 with host Dobyns-Bennett third with 117 points. Science Hill was the girls champion 173-170.5 over Dobyns-Bennett. Tennessee High finished third with 130 points. Boone’s biggest stars — sprinter Evan Tomlinson and distance runner Fisher Battel — came through with huge performances.
