TORONTO — I don’t know how the next 14 years of Toronto Blue Jays history will shake out, let alone what Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. will look like in his late 30s, but that’s OK. The real-world news of the day offers no guarantee we won’t be living by then in a dystopian hellscape.

It never used to be about clicks. Usually, you’d know if you’d hit a story out of the ballpark because your competitors were forced to follow it up the next day. Or if you pissed off the player. Or the manager, as I discovered early on in my writing career when I turned a “Yeah, why not, St. Louis is a great baseball city,” comment from Tim Raines into an article: “Raines open to Cards.” Easy, easy column. Easy. “You dumb ass,” Buck Rodgers, then-Montreal Expos manager, greeted me the next day.

It was the beginning of the end of the simpler times for Major League Baseball in 1998 when Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa went head-to-head in pursuit of the single-season home run record. It wasn’t quite Bird versus Magic. Doubt we’ll ever see that, again, in any sport. But even the revisionist history that followed couldn’t detract from the truth that the steroid-fuelled homer frenzy put badly needed wind into the sails of MLB.

Leave it to the Los Angeles Dodgers to give off whiffs of instability despite running out a lineup with three future Hall of Famers at the top, including a guy even Mark Shapiro might agree is a generational player.
