Our readers have been voting over the last few weeks and these are your 2024 Difference Makers, Kylee Rawlings, Hollie Davis, Jason and Sara Rhew, Mon T Grays, and Tony Byrd. Kylee Rawlings is a kindergarten teacher at Malden Elementary who cares about children above and beyond what is required.

Grief. It comes with a myriad of emotions. Some get through it fairly easily, and others struggle with it for quite some time. There are those unfortunates who never recover from it. Grief has been defined as the normal response to a major loss, such as the death of a loved one. Grief may also be felt by a person with a serious, long-term illness or with a terminal illness. It may include feelings of great sadness, anger, guilt, and despair. There are five stages of grief.
Concessionaire of the Year

The Freedom House food booth has been named as the Concessionaire of the Year for the 2024 Delta Fair. Dennis Russell and Melissa Gaydos of Freedom House shared on the event. This will be our third year, said Essex native Russell. A few years before we were interested in getting in the fair, but you cant get in unless somebody gets out. We had our name on the list and they happened to call us, he added. Russell continued, Its been great. We havent found our niche quite yet.

Whos the sheriff? Thats the million dollar question following Tuesdays election after the miscount of votes. I know there are many questions being asked and rumors spreading throughout the County. How did this happen? How do you miss an entire box of ballots? To deem it just an accident doesnt seem enough at first glance. But, I believe thats what it was, an accident. An extremely unfortunate one, but an accident just the same.

This week I had the opportunity to spend some time with the 2024 Dunklin County Farm Family. Congratulations to the Emmons family. Dwight and Kim Emmons, along with their children, Kristen and Kade, are a fine family and represent this noble profession well. Look for an upcoming special section in the DDD celebrating this family. Ive had lots of farmers in my family. Through the years Ive been witness to the hard work they do. Ive known a lot of old farmers, as well.

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday, although shocking at first, didnt really surprise me. Ive thought for awhile now it would be just a matter of time before someone took a shot at one of the candidates. So, what happens now? Do we continue on in the same vein spewing hate towards one another or do we meet somewhere in the middle? Is there such a thing as healthy conflict? Can we learn to disagree better? That remains to be seen.

Biden Should Pass The Torch. Biden Should Dropout. Biden Under Pressure to Step Aside. These are just a few of the nations headlines this morning. After a disastrous performance during the recent presidential debate, followed by a lackluster interview on ABC, wrapped up by an underwhelming presser on Thursday night, it seems most want Biden to go. Members of his own party, media, and even his staunchest celebrity supporters say its over. He cannot beat Trump.

I said goodbye to another good friend this week. With the passing of Carl Williams I lost a friend who enjoyed the art of conversation. We had a bunch of them, Carl and I. A majority of them centered around the history of Kennett. In fact, with Keith Mitchell, Sol Astrachan, and now, Carl, all gone, weve lost quite a few of our local historians. As a fellow Rotarian member Carl passed on a lot of Rotary history to me. A testament to Carl was during his visitation.

On Thursday night the Kennett Rotary Club held their Officers Installation Dinner. It was a wonderful time of good fellowship and looking towards our communitys future. A civic club is an organized group that comes to help the community. Most also have a national or international cause. Dunklin County has many different civic clubs. You may not have a club name jump immediately to mind, but believe me, youve seen their efforts.

Last week I shared my thoughts on revitalizing our community. This week well examine a few strategies that could help. The key to regaining that small town pride and community camaraderie is connections. Before everything became digital the town connected via sidewalks to a variety of centers. Centers being gathering places such as downtown, parks, and, yes, even front porches. Were improving our sidewalks in various locations around town and thats a good start.
