As the coaching carousel got wound up this weekend with the firings of Peter Laviolette in New York along with Anaheim Ducks bench boss Greg Cronin, I would like to remind everybody of a sobering fact: in the history of the NHL, which stretches back to 1917, there have only been three head coaches who led two different teams to Stanley Cup victories.

Solid move by the Edmonton Oilers signing Quinn Hutson of the BU Terriers to a two-year deal. There were a few teams after Hutson, but the Oilers were aggressive from the start and never relented in their pursuit. Outside of Oilers GM Stan Bowman helping to make this happen was Kalle Larsson, former GM of the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints, now working in a player development role with the Oilers. Both Larsson and Bowman have ties with the Hutson family through Chicago.

Plenty of names are popping up for the Philadelphia Flyers coaching position. And while Rick Tocchet’s name may be the one on everybody’s lips, there are plenty more who should get some consideration. Internally, Ian Laperriere, head coach of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, will certainly get a conversation, and I would hope interim head coach Brad Shaw will be given a chance to keep the job. But let’s go over a couple more. Pat Ferschweiler at Western Michigan is ready for the next step in his career.

NHL: I could understand the 10-minute misconduct for abuse of officials against Chicago Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard last Thursday against San Jose. It was most likely an accumulation of comments directed at Chris Rooney, who just hit a boiling point and said enough.

To no surprise, I’m told the Dallas Stars and Wyatt Johnston are working away at what his next deal will look like. Ideally, Stars GM Jim Nill would prefer to have Johnston’s number nailed down before making Trade Deadline moves, but this isn’t a perfect world. It sounds like the Stars forward is in the $8-8.5 million AAV range on an eight-year deal. Nice hat trick by the 21-year-old last night against the St Louis Blues. You have to give props to Chicago Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson.
