So, when do they start coming for the Florida Panthers? Sure, there will be some tough decisions at season’s end about pending unrestricted free agents like Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and defenceman Aaron Ekblad, and we all assume the Panthers will do their best to try to keep the on-ice band together as much as they can. But what about other people in the organization?

Plenty of chatter lately about former NHLer Marco Sturm, currently coaching with the Los Angeles Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. And with a new GM coming in L.A. (most likely Ken Holland, as reported) we don’t exactly know the status of head coach Jim Hiller. Managers generally get to bring in their own guys BUT that doesn’t necessarily mean Hiller’s out, it’s just that his situation gets a little cloudy.

Congrats to Peter DeBoer and the Dallas Stars on an incredible first-round victory over the Colorado Avalanche in a series that went back and forth and ultimately led to a thrilling Game 7. And in the process DeBoer set the record for most Game 7 wins with nine. One small note about DeBoer and Game 7s, because I’m sure you’re curious: the last time DeBoer lost one in his career was the OHL final in 2000 as his Plymouth Whalers fell to the Barrie Colts 4-2.

As the coaching carousel got wound up this weekend with the firings of Peter Laviolette in New York along with Anaheim Ducks bench boss Greg Cronin, I would like to remind everybody of a sobering fact: in the history of the NHL, which stretches back to 1917, there have only been three head coaches who led two different teams to Stanley Cup victories.
