    NEW ORLEANS — Powerful storms with a threat of tornadoes are expected to punch through Louisiana and other parts of the South today just as costumed revelers celebrate Mardi Gras with huge parades and partying in the streets of New Orleans and other cities in the region. New Orleans moved up its two biggest Mardi Gras Day parades and cut down their routes to try to avoid the potentially destructive weather.

    ATLANTA — A shooting early Sunday during homecoming weekend at Tuskegee University in Alabama left one person dead and injured 16 others, a dozen of them by gunfire, authorities said. One arrest was announced hours later. The agency did not say whether Myrick was a student at the historically Black university where the shooting erupted as the school’s 100th Homecoming Week was winding down.

    A Georgia man was arraigned Thursday on federal charges of threatening to kill the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. John Donovan Woodbury, 34, of Roswell was arraigned in federal court in Atlanta, U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan announced.     OMAHA, Neb. — Residents began sifting through the rubble Saturday after a tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, demolishing homes and businesses as it moved for miles through farmland and into subdivisions, then slamming an Iowa town. The Friday night tornadoes wreaked havoc in the Midwest, causing a building to collapse with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes. There were several injuries but no fatalities reported.
