    How do you know when you’ve slid into despotism? Strangely, a fairly good answer to that question right now is: “If you can watch the video below, then we’ve slid into despotism.”Did it play? The link isn’t dead? If it played, then that’s terrible news — that farting baby penguin is a harbinger of the end of democracy (is a sentence that I thought I’d never write). Because that penguin is on TikTok, and TikTok is supposed to be banned in the US.

    Glenn Greenwald — a journalist whose work I really don’t like — is the subject of controversy this week after videos of him engaged in saucy sex play leaked online. And the word “saucy” in that sentence is carrying a structural load several times greater than the Hoover Dam; in fact, I would like to nominate my use of the word “saucy” just now for the Nobel Prize in Euphemisms.

    Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was blindsided by Heath and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s announcement that the coronavirus vaccine would no longer be recommended for pregnant women and healthy children. Our entire agency was shocked: RFK, Jr. made the surprise statement on Twitter without consulting anyone at the CDC, and only provided us with confusing and contradictory guidance later that day.
