When General Motors turned off the taps for the Chevrolet Equinox crossover at its CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont., the next step was a leap into the unknown. As soon as the line shut down in April 2022, a $1-billion retooling began to usher in the electric era for the company in Canada. It was an audacious $1-billion gamble. CAMI would not just build electric vehicles, but commercial electric vehicles. Commercial electric vehicles without any history and without a ready-made market.

The third-generation Hemi arrived two decades ago, tugging on the nostalgia heartstrings of buyers who fondly remembered the 7.0-litre Hemi that ruled the streets in the late 1960s and early ’70s. The third-generation engine was fully modernized, of course, and it underwent continual updating to increase performance. Most significantly, it gave Ram fans something to crow about for the next two decades. “Hey! That thing got a Hemi.”Not for much longer.

A case in point: Ram pickup sales were down 24.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2024 compared with the first quarter of 2023, against a market that was up 9.2 per cent. We know of Ram dealerships, with full lots, offering discounts of up to 30 per cent, depending on the model. Jeep sales were down 12.2 per cent for the quarter. Is it coincidence that we’ve seen Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds being offered for lease at 89 bucks a week plus tax and $2,500 down? No it isn’t.
