Construction of the AWS campus and Synergy Cells Plant near New Carlisle, Ind., is causing increased traffic on U.S. 20 and Indiana 2. A diverging diamond interchange at Indiana 2/Larrison is planned for 2026 to improve traffic flow and safety. The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department is increasing patrols to help manage traffic in the construction areas. If you regularly travel U.S. 20 or Indiana 2 on the county's west side, you’ve noticed a significant increase in traffic in recent months.

Earlier this summer, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture released a new report on the loss of farmland across the state from 2010 to 2022. The report was a response to the Indiana General Assembly's 2023 request for an estimate of the losses. News organizations across the state called attention to the loss of 350,000 acres of farmland, or about 2% of the total inventory. The report contained very few surprises.

Recent announcements by GM/Samsung and AWS have generated a lot of excitement in the region. The two projects alone could bring more than $14 Billion in new investment and create over 2,000 new jobs (1,700 at GM/Samsung; 400 at AWS). Construction is currently underway on both sites. And that doesn't even factor in the just-confirmed news earlier this week that Microsoft plans to build data centers at the St. Joe Farm in Granger and in LaPorte.
