There was a time, back when I broke into this business as a cub reporter straight out of college back in the day, when we had to hop in our car and hoof it back to the office to file a story on deadline. There were no fancy laptops. The supersonic Wi-Fi was definitely not booming. And LancasterOnline was about, oh, 20 years out. Cover a game. Drive to downtown Lancaster. Find a cozy spot in the office at venerable 8 West King Street, usually in the Sunday News area, which was empty at night.

UNIVERSITY PARK — The gold medals were doled out and the championship trophy was hoisted. It was a happy pack of Barons. Manheim Central’s boys volleyball team had finally climbed to the tippy top of the mountain, compliments of a 3-1 payback victory over previously unbeaten Meadville in the PIAA Class 2A title tilt Saturday in Penn State’s venerable Rec Hall. And who did Barons’ coach Craig Dietrich spot in the crowd after the wild celebration?

Ask and you shall receive. Volleyball fans have been clamoring for a PIAA Class 2A championship rematch, and they got it. In this corner, it’s Manheim Central. The Barons are 23-1, they’re the three-time reigning Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 champs, finished as the league runner-up, and steamrolled to the District 3 championship and three dominating state-playoff victories. In the other corner, it’s Meadville, from the greater Erie area.

And then, ladies and gentlemen and boys and girls, there was one. One L-L League spring sports team is still standing heading into PIAA championship weekend. And that squad is Manheim Central's boys volleyball team, which will play for state Class 2A gold on Saturday against Meadville at Penn State. Meadville beat Central in last year's PIAA finale, so this will be a rematch.

An even 16 Lancaster-Lebanon League boys volleyball standouts have earned District 3 all-star honors for their exploits on the court during the 2025 season. That includes eight players in Class 3A, eight players in 2A, and the Player of the Year in 2A, Manheim Central senior setter Dylan Musser. Manheim Central coach Craig Dietrich, who guided the Barons to their second district championship, and into the PIAA 2A title match for the second year in a row, was tabbed Coach of the Year.
