State Sen. Byron Pelton made use of Monday’s Memorial Day Service held by Jake Uhrig Post 3541, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion Post 20Memorial Day ceremony to note the 50-year anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. American Legion Post 20 Commander Joe Notario opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks, followed by the Windsong Chorus’ rendition of the National Anthem. Sterling Police Chaplain Jared Sonnenberg delivered the invocation.

Colorado’s new Legislative Rural Caucus is flexing its muscles, listing it’s opposition to the appointment of a “rewilding” advocate to head the State Land Board. Nicole Rosmarino has been recommended to Gov. Jared Polis as the sole finalist for the directorship. Rosmarino is Polis’ advisor on land use and agricultural policies. She is also a vocal advocate of “rewilding,” a policy of returning the prairie to it’s original state by banning all grazing, farming and energy development.

Sterling Rotary Club awarded scholarships to nearly a dozen Logan County high school graduates recently. Six students received scholarships to attend Northeastern Junior College and five others were awarded Marcia Luce Memorial Scholarships.

Dusty Johnson wasted no time making her mark on the 75th Colorado General Assembly. The freshman Republican representative from Fort Morgan hit the ground running in January, sponsoring 10 pieces of legislation in the House and putting her name on three more over in the Senate. Johnson’s biggest accomplishment, however, might not even be a new Colorado law, but a new organization within the Legislature called the Legislative Rural Caucus.

Twenty-four Merino High School seniors finished their high school careers Sunday during a graduation ceremony in the school’s gymnasium. Another 28 eighth-graders were ushered into high school, introduced as the Class of 2029. Superintendent Lonnie Brungardt opened the ceremony by congratulating the Class of ’25 and listing some of their achievements.
