As someone who grew up with PBS, it somewhat pains me to write this column. The launch of “Sesame Street” in 1969 was my window to the world as a 3-year-old in the six-TV station Chicago media market, and Bert and Ernie were the talk of my kindergarten class. A lot has changed since then. Last week, “Sesame Street” featured a trans hairstylist in a monster makeover segment that congressional Republicans say wreaks of child grooming.

Albuquerque City Councilor Dan Lewis referred to it as “broken arrow,” a military code used by ground units facing destruction who call for immediate air support on their own position. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says deploying the New Mexico National Guard here is necessary due to a “surge in criminal activity” that has created a state of emergency in Albuquerque.

Well, no one is going to accuse Melanie Stansbury of being a stateswoman after her performance at last week’s joint session of Congress. The second full-term congresswoman from Albuquerque landed a key spot at the March 4 joint session, perched along the center aisle of the U.S. House of Representatives as President Donald Trump entered the chamber, unescorted by any Democrat, as is the tradition.

Growing up, I had a rascally older brother who would always try to lead me astray. He’d tell me things like the Cubs stunk and the White Sox were No. 1, when I knew that was utter disinformation. He’d do things like write “Jeff is a butthole” in a tiny notebook and hide it somewhere in the house, knowing I’d search high and low to find that notebook to make sure no one else found it, read that passage, and got the wrong impression about me. kAm$@ H96?

On the heels of another contentious presidential election, some people are understandably concerned about the conversation turning political at holiday gatherings. No one wants it, but it seems to happen at my family’s home after every presidential election. Someone brings up Donald Trump, and suddenly family members who truly do love one another, and some of whom haven’t seen each other in a calendar year, are at each other’s throats at the dinner table.

One of the first things I observed during my internship on Capitol Hill were the beautifully aligned wooden buckets of ice on the third floor of the Cannon House Office Building. The oak buckets were placed about 2 feet to the left of every House office entrance as you enter, about 16 inches from the wall, early every morning. I’d say one in 20 of the ice buckets were taken into the House offices throughout the day.

I never knew what burnt fentanyl smelled like until I did laundry.
