    Up and out. Sales tax is going up while vehicle stickers and dog tags will be eliminated in Palos Park. The village council voted on April 14 to increase the non-home rule sales tax by 0.5% and repeal an ordinance licensing motor vehicles in the village. Mayor Nicole Milovich Walters said there is already a 0.5% non-home rule sales tax and it brings in an estimated $350,000 per year. This new tax rate will go into effect Jan. 1.

    Bloom vs. Bloom Trail. It was a rivalry on the basketball court that was legendary until it ceased when the two athletic programs merged in 1995-96. Now, the rivalry is back — at least for one night — as former stars from both schools will play in a pair of alumni games Saturday at McCann gym at Bloom High School, 101 W 10th St., Chicago Heights. Age didn’t mellow anyone. There is a true love-hate relationship between the combatants.

    When NFL player Miles Boykin was given a key to the city during the 2022 Tinley Park Block Party, Mayor Michael Glotz praised him. At the time, Boykin, a Tinley Park native, was under contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Glotz said on that July 17 that he wanted to see Boykin in a Bears uniform someday. For the mayor — and other fans — that day came April 3 when the former Providence Catholic and Notre Dame star signed a one-year free agent contract with the Bears.
