Some sources say the odds of hitting a hole-in-one on a Par 4 hole in golf are 6 million to one. Other sources say it’s more like 1 million to one. Either way, such a feat is a once-in-several-lifetimes accomplishment. Only seven pro golfers have ever done it in tournament play. Up until last week, no one had ever hit a hole-in-one on the Par 4 Hole #1 at Frisch Auf! Valley Country Club in La Grange.

After a long run in the basketball playoffs, the Fayetteville Lions didn’t begin their baseball season until March 4. And that opener was a doozy. The Lions beat defending state 2A semifinalist Flatonia 17-16 (despite committing five errors and having to use seven different pitchers). Fayetteville then rolled to a district title, finishing the regular season with a 12-3 record (a lot less games than most teams because of that hoops season).

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” is an elegant way of describing the virtue of persistence. But I like the way Fayetteville pitcher Jack Schley put it instead Saturday in the dugout at Dell Diamond with a gold medal around his neck. “Falling short really sucks,” Schley said. The Fayetteville baseball program is one of the best in the state, and has been for a long time. But for the previous two years they had fallen painfully short of their ultimate goal.

E aston Jaeger’s last baseball game playing for his dad Clint was a truly special one. Easton, a senior, was named MVP of the state championship game as the Fayetteville Lions, managed by his dad Clint, won the state title Saturday with a 4-2 win over Gordon. That’s why the Jaeger boys are an easy choice as this week’s Fayette County Athletes of the Week – our firstever father-son honorees. “It’s everything,” said Easton of being able to share the title with his father.
