Confirmation came after a question from Sir Jeffrey at Prime Minister’s Questions today in Parliament. “Leo Varadkar and I were very often on different ends of the political spectrum. We differed on the Republic of Ireland’s approach to legacy, and sharply differed on his approach and attitude on the Protocol and the constitutional future of Northern Ireland. Where we differed we did so respectfully. There were other areas where we were able to work together on matters of mutual benefit for both our countries.

Were the regulation to be adopted, it would mean a substantial expansion of EU intellectual property law in Northern Ireland covering craft and industrial goods. It would add 50 pages of EU law to the Windsor Framework, all under the oversight of the European Court of Justice. Most significantly it would create a new and unacceptable regulatory border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

This is a significant moment. It comes after the DUP secured legal protections preventing the Government from automatically adding new EU rules to the Protocol/Windsor Framework in the absence of cross-community consent. Commenting, Sir Jeffrey said,‘‘EU Regulation 2023/2411 would substantially expand EU intellectual property law in Northern Ireland. That could have serious implications for trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and mean new checks at our ports.

Sir Jeffrey said, “The DUP’s values align more with people on Capitol Hill than Sinn Féin’s left wing ideology. Unionism needs to keep nurturing and building alliances in Washington. For too long unionism has been inward facing instead of reaching out and growing.

Sir Jeffrey said, “The work of the police, army or the security services was a just cause. Their job was to undermine terrorists. The fact that the security services had so many agents working at the top of the PIRA, is testament to their success. Whilst having lessons to learn for the Government, the report reminds us that the intelligence agencies had infiltrated the PIRA to such an extent that they rendered the organisation almost inoperable.
