    Managing your or a loved one’s health is deeply personal, and it's troubling how some of the most effective options are unaffordable to all but the wealthy, especially for very common and treatable chronic diseases like obesity. The lack of access to effective treatment options for obesity is even more disheartening given its prevalence among Americans.

    On Nov. 5 this year we as voters have a crucial decision to make on the political direction we want this county to follow. I believe we can chose a course of intolerance and bigotry or a course of accepting our humanity with its failures and successes while striving to improve our own lives and those of others. The choice is ours as voters.

    Two Debs and an Ann are heading back to the river again traveling north to Hudson Bay on the mighty Red River. The three women include Deb Knutson (Paul) of Owatonna, Deb White and Ann Sherve of the Twin Cities. This is the final leg of their journey as they make their way northward to Hudson Bay. The Canadian Mounties gracefully stored their canoe and boots for them in Winnipeg this past winter. Up to then they had spent the past two summers paddling northward until they reached Winnipeg in 2023.

    I thought it was refreshing to see another monthly column contributor express his views on our current political environment in his column in last Tuesday's edition, of the Owatonna People's Press and I think we could use more thoughtful discussion regarding our political environment. I've enjoyed reading his previous columns where he has talked about healthy living and photography. He identifies as a "boomer" aka "baby boomer" which refers to people born between 1946-1964 as I was.

    When you mention the name Luverne Wanous to most folks in Steele County a smile comes to their face as they remember attending dances and even private parties with Luverne and his concertina providing the music. Yes, it's been 80 years since Luverne, at eight years old, entertained at a gathering in Steele Center. He continued to perfect his playing and eventually joined several local bands before forming his own band.
