Lake Highlands United Methodist Church will host author and descendent of holocaust survivors Ron Schwarz in May. Ron is the son of Charles Schwarz, who lived in Nazi Germany as a boy before fleeing to France. As Nazi occupiers pushed deeper into Europe and their threat became increasingly evident, Charles fled through the treacherous mountain crossing at the French-Swiss border. Ron’s grandparents were among the 200,000 people sent to Dachau concentration camp.

Around mid-March, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts around White Rock Lake may have noticed something happening in the bald eagle nest in Lake Highlands Park. That’s because, according to City of Dallas department of park and recreation urban biologist Chris Morris, the eagles affectionately known as ‘Nick and Nora” have successfully hatched a new pair of eaglets. Park staff observed the end of mating behavior toward the middle of February, he said.

It differs from the older ranch-style homes and newer sharp modern homes on the street. The facade is simple and flat — three perfectly symmetrical gables, three shutters and three alcoves framing large glass windows and a door striking. “As an architect, I wanted to create something very simple in form,” Wonjin Park says.

It’s a Tuesday afternoon. Misti Norris is elbows-deep breaking down a pig in the kitchen of Petra and the Beast. This particular pig is marked for aging. Depending on the cut, it’ll cure for two to three weeks before aging and drying for another eight or nine months. Norris puts aside the riblets to marinate for that Wednesday’s family meal. Norris, a semi-self-taught butcher, has been breaking down pigs since her time at the now-shuttered New American restaurant FT33.

The worst outfit LaDarius Campbell has ever worn was to the eighth-grade prom. It was a slightly oversized white suit with a powder pink vest and matching tie. He had his hair pressed and wore a pink hat with a feather in it. He had on what he calls “gator shoes” with shades a little too big for his narrow face. “I’m just the small guy with these gators and my legs propped up on this GMC Suburban that is making me look even smaller,” he says.
