By Jem AnshawIt has been an horrific fortnight on Upper Hunter roads with five families left reeling with the loss of a loved one, while others wait for news on family members and friends in hospital. “We’ve had five lives lost in the Upper Hunter in the last week and a half, which is just a terrible tragedy for the local community and for the families of those people, particularly this time of year,” Hunter Valley Police District acting inspector Todd Hobson said of the four crashes.

BY JEM ANSHAWEmotions are high in Merriwa following the announcement that Upper Hunter Shire Council are looking at options for what the future of Gummun Place Aged Care Hostel will be. It came as a shock to residents according to Liz Griffiths, Merriwa Progress Association secretary, as there was no community consultation about the decision prior to it appearing in the business paper for the October council meeting.

BY JEM ANSHAWMuswellbrook Shire Council has been undertaking their most comprehensive community consultation process to date while working on the Community Strategic Plan. They have held pop up stalls at shopping areas and local events, opened an online survey and last week hosted a Business Breakfast. “It’s really important that we listen to the community, and not just listen, but we listen and act on behalf of the community,” Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton said of the process.

By Jem AnshawSince the Upper Hunter was rocked by a 4.7 magnitude earthquake on Friday, August 23, and a number of aftershocks since, there has been a lot of questions around the geological events raised by residents who have not experienced anything like it before. The good news is that now more information will be available to earthquake scientists like Jonathan Griffin to help investigate what is happening.

BY JEM ANSHAWThe NSW Police Force offers a range of career opportunities that were on display at the Recruitment Roadshow in Muswellbrook on the weekend, and there were plenty of curious community members who attended to learn more about them. Prospective police officers were able to learn more about the application and training process as well as speaking with members of the marine, K9, forensic and highway patrol crews among others.
